[texts]NLO distributions for Higgs production at the LHC - J. Smith
We report on results for the NLO corrected differential distributions $d\sigma/dp_T$ and $d\sigma/dy$ for the process $p + p\to H + 'X'$, where $p_T$ and $y$ are the transverse momentum and rapidity of the Higgs-boson $H$ respectively and $X$ denotes the inclusive hadronic state. All QCD partonic subprocesses have been included. The computation is carried out in the limit that the top-quark mass $m_t \to \infty$...

[texts]Two loop matching conditions on $\bar{\rm MS}$ parton densities - J. Smith
We discuss how the operator product expansion (OPE) can be used to derive asymptotic expressions for certain integrals. This yields operator matrix elements (OME's) which determine the matching conditions for $\bar{\rm MS}$ parton densities across heavy flavour thresholds. Then we construct four and five-flavour densities from a three-flavour set via the AP equation using LO and NLO splitting functions.

[texts]The Asymptotic Dimension of the First Grigorchuk Group is Infinity - J. Smith
We prove that the asymptotic dimension of the first Grigorchuk group is infinity.
[texts]On asymptotic dimension of countable abelian groups - J. Smith
We compute the asymptotic dimension of the rationals given with an invariant proper metric. Also, we show that a countable torsion abelian group taken with an invariant proper metric has asymptotic dimension zero.

[texts]$\bar{\rm MS}$ parton densities with NNLO heavy flavor matching conditions - A. Chuvakin
A study is made of charm and bottom flavor matching conditions on parton densities. Starting from an $\bar{\rm MS}$ three-flavor density set, where the scale $\mu < m_c$, and using the recently derived two-loop matching conditions, we provide a new set of four-flavor parton densities where $ m_c \le \mu < m_b$ and five-flavor densities where $\mu \ge m_b$. The effect of the next-to-next-to-leading order matching conditions on the evolution equations is important for scales just above the transit...

[texts]An absolute quantum energy inequality for the Dirac field in curved spacetime - Calvin J. Smith
Quantum Weak Energy Inequalities (QWEIs) are results which limit the extent to which the smeared renormalised energy density of a quantum field can be negative. On globally hyperbolic spacetimes the massive quantum Dirac field is known to obey a QWEI in terms of a reference state chosen arbitrarily from the class of Hadamard states; however, there exist spacetimes of interest on which state-dependent bounds cannot be evaluated...

[texts]A boundary element regularised Stokeslet method applied to cilia and flagella-driven flow - David J. Smith
A boundary element implementation of the regularised Stokeslet method of Cortez is applied to cilia and flagella-driven flows in biology. Previously-published approaches implicitly combine the force discretisation and the numerical quadrature used to evaluate boundary integrals. By contrast, a boundary element method can be implemented by discretising the force using basis functions, and calculating integrals using accurate numerical or analytic integration...

[texts]Charm and Bottom Quark Production Cross Sections Near Threshold - J. Smith
The cross sections for charm and bottom quark production in the threshold region are discussed. We consider the effects of an all order resummation of initial state soft-plus-virtual gluon radiation on the total cross sections compared to the order $\alpha_s^3$ results.

[texts]Trees, linear orders and Gâteaux smooth norms - Richard J. Smith
We introduce a linearly ordered set Z and use it to prove a necessity condition for the existence of a G\^ateaux smooth norm on C(T), where T is a tree. This criterion is directly analogous to the corresponding equivalent condition for Fr\'echet smooth norms. In addition, we prove that if C(T) admits a G\^ateaux smooth lattice norm then it also admits a lattice norm with strictly convex dual norm.

[texts]Asymptotic Dimension of Discrete Groups - A. Dranishnikov
We extend Gromov's notion of asymptotic dimension of finitely generated groups to all discrete groups. In particular, we extend the Hurewicz type theorem proven in [B-D2] to general groups. Then we use this extension to prove a formula for the asymptotic dimension of finitely generated solvable groups in terms of their Hirsch length.

[texts]X-ray emission properties of galaxies in Abell 3128 - Russell J. Smith
We use archival Chandra X-ray Observatory data to investigate X-ray emission from early-type galaxies in the rich z=0.06 cluster Abell 3128. By combining the X-ray count-rates from an input list of optically-selected galaxies, we obtain a statistical detection of X-ray flux, unbiased by X-ray selection limits. Using 87 galaxies with reliable Chandra data, X-ray emission is detected for galaxies down to M_B ~ -19.0, with only an upper limit determined for galaxies at M_B ~ -18.3...

[texts]A characterisation of compact, fragmentable linear orders - R. J. Smith
We give a characterisation of fragmentable, compact linearly order spaces. In particular, we show that if $K$ is a compact, fragmentable, linearly ordered space then $K$ is a Radon-Nikod\'{y}m compact. In addition, we obtain some corollaries in topology and renorming theory.

[texts]Equivalence of Geometric Engineering and Hanany-Witten - Douglas J. Smith
We show the equivalence of three different realisations of gauge theory in string theory. These are the Hanany-Witten brane constructions, the use of branes as probes and geometric engineering. We illustrate the equivalence via T- and S-dualities with the simplest non-trivial examples in four dimensions: N = 2 SYM with gauge groups SU(N_1) x SU(N_2) x .....
[texts]ISOCAM Mid-Infrared Imaging of the Quiescent Spiral Galaxy NGC 7331 - Beverly J. Smith
Using the mid-infrared camera (ISOCAM) on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), the Sb LINER galaxy NGC 7331 has been imaged in two broadband and four narrowband filters between 6.75 and 15 microns. These maps show a prominent circumnuclear ring of radius 0.25 arcminutes X 0.75 arcminutes (1.1 X 3.3 kpc) encircling an extended central source. The 7.7 and 11.3 micron dust emission features are strong in this galaxy, contributing approximately 1/3 of the total IRAS 12 micron broadband flux from th...
[texts]Synthesis of H-alpha absorption in old stellar systems: Formation of the cluster red sequence by "Downsizing" - Russell J. Smith
We compute population synthesis models for the variation of H-alpha absorption indices (HaA and HaF), as a function of age and metallicity in old stellar systems. The models are based on the STELIB spectral library, and defined at resolution of 3 Angstrom FWHM. The indices are found to be highly sensitive to age variation, with only moderate response to metallicity. For galaxies uncontaminated by nebular emission, our HaA index is more powerful in breaking the age/metallicity degeneracy than H-b...
[texts]Bottom quark production cross section at fixed-target $pp$ experiments - N. Kidonakis
The cross section for bottom quark production at fixed-target energies is calculated for a wide range of beam momenta. A detailed analysis is given for the HERA-B experiment. We consider both the order $\alpha_s^3$ cross section and the resummation of soft gluon corrections in all orders of QCD perturbation theory. The inclusive transverse momentum and rapidity distributions, including resummation, for bottom quark production at HERA-B are also presented.
[texts]Intersecting brane solutions in string and M-theory - Douglas J. Smith
We review various aspects of configurations of intersecting branes, including the conditions for preservation of supersymmetry. In particular, we discuss the projection conditions on the Killing spinors for given brane configurations and the relation to calibrations. This highlights the close connection between intersecting branes and branes wrapping supersymmetric cycles as well as special holonomy manifolds...

Our radio continuum maps show an asymmetric double-lobedstructure, with a high surface brightness lobe extending 3.6 arcmin (~100 kpc) to the southeast and a 6.2 arcmin (~180 kpc) low surface brightness feature in the northwest...

[texts]Infrared Colors and Variability of Evolved Stars from COBE DIRBE Data - Beverly J. Smith
For a complete 12 micron flux-limited sample of 207 IRAS sources, we have extracted light curves in seven infrared bands between 1.25 - 60 microns using the database of the DIRBE instrument on the COBE satellite. Using previous infrared surveys, we filtered these light curves to remove datapoints affected by nearby companions. In the time-averaged DIRBE color-color plots, we find clear segregation of semi-regulars, Mira variables, carbon stars, OH/IR stars, and red giants without circumstellar d...

[texts]Evolution program for parton densities with perturbative heavy flavor boundary conditions - A. Chuvakin
A new code for the scale evolution of modified-minimal-subtraction-scheme parton densities is described. Through next-to-leading order the program uses exact splitting functions. In next-to-next-to-leading order approximate splitting functions are used. For efficiency the program includes analytical results for the evaluation of the weights required for the integrations over the longitudinal momentum fractions of the partons...

[texts]Tree duplicates, $G_δ$-diagonals and Gruenhage spaces - Richard J. Smith
We present an example in ZFC of a locally compact, scattered Hausdorff non-Gruenhage space $D$ having a $\G_delta$-diagonal. This answers a question posed by Orihuela, Troyanski and the author in a study of strictly convex norms on Banach spaces. In addition, we show that the Banach space of continuous functions $C_0(D)$ admits a $C^\infty$-smooth bump function.

[texts]Threshold corrections to rapidity distributions of Z and W^\pm bosons beyond N^2 LO at hadron colliders - V. Ravindran
Threshold enhanced perturbative QCD corrections to rapidity distributions of $Z$ and $W^\pm$ bosons at hadron colliders are presented using the Sudakov resummed cross sections at N${}^3$LO level. We have used renormalisation group invariance and the mass factorisation theorem that these hard scattering cross sections satisfy to construct the QCD amplitudes. We show that these higher order threshold QCD corrections stabilise the theoretical predictions for vector boson production at the LHC under...

[texts]Gruenhage compacta and strictly convex dual norms - Richard J. Smith
We prove that if K is a Gruenhage compact space then C(K)* admits an equivalent, strictly convex dual norm. As a corollary, we show that if X is a Banach space and X* is the |.|-closed linear span of K, where K is a Gruenhage compact in the w*-topology and |.| is equivalent to a coarser, w*-lower semicontinuous norm on X*, then X* admits an equivalent, strictly convex dual norm. We give a partial converse to the first result by showing that if T is a tree, then C(T)* admits an equivalent, strict...
